horse racing – northside style

I met a most chatty older gentleman recently. Noticing my absorption in the sports pages, he politely asked if I was interested in local racing history. He then told me about races near the Preston Arms, the privately owned track behind the Red House/Croxton Park Hotel, and John Wren’s Fitzroy racecourse, which was actually located in St George’s Road, Northcote!

It is more than rumoured that private detectives hired by the Victoria Racing Club visited often – especially as V.R.C rules forbade any licensed bookie, trainer or jockey from working at unofficial/privately owned racing venues. These and many other inner suburban tracks were active from the 1860s, some until the 1920s.

Many thanks to a lovely and informative conversationalist! Yet another reason I love the 86 tram…

About Vetti

I love good coffee, street art, tiki bars and kitsch. Adore roller derby and quiffs and vintage Hawaiian shirts. Enjoy a slice of my northside life!
