home improvement

And what a weekend it’s been! Yesterday was perfect gardening weather, so we weeded, pruned, trimmed/sprayed the hedge, mowed, mulched…and flaked out with a cold beer. Moving indoors, we hung Livebird’s Elephants of Design and put together a large lamp that Kymbo and Giz gave us. It looks suspiciously like – no, it owes much of it’s design to the Arco lamp, designed by the talented Castiglioni brothers in 1962. Those clever Italians reworked a shape already in use as street lighting, and created this.

The faux-Arco looks tres swank in the alcove off the lounge, curving gracefully over my handbuilt divan (two tone upholstered in turquoise and cream, made for my grandparents), and my 4970/84 Kartell unit from 1967. I don’t have a tower of them (yet), but this picture shows Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s design off rather well. Aren’t plastics wonderful? This unit is ABS, and crafted without any bolts or bracing…

For anyone out there wondering, these images come from Design Directory Italy, via, you guessed it, Kymbo and Giz – super friends, and givers of truly fine presents.

About Vetti

I love good coffee, street art, tiki bars and kitsch. Adore roller derby and quiffs and vintage Hawaiian shirts. Enjoy a slice of my northside life!
